This type of experimental design is suitable to study efficiently and economically, the joint effect of several factors on a response variable of interest. In general, each factor could be observed at several levels, but the most used experiments in industry are the factorial experiments in which each factor takes on only two levels, for example two temperatures, two levels of a reagent, and two qualitative characteristics of some factor, for example a piece with or without some characteristic.
